homo erectus means 'upright man'. All the fossils included in this species belong to particular human races.
speculated to be direct ancestor to human, living from 1,600,000 to 250,000 years ago
( ho mow ee-wreck tuss)A fossil hominid species dating from at least 1.8 mya to 100,000 ya or so. First appearing in Africa, H. erectus was the first hominid species to expand beyond that continent. Fossils are found throughout Africa and Asia, and there is possible evidence from Europe. Members of this species had a brain size average about two-thirds that of modern humans, made advances in stone tool technology, and were able to control fire late in their existence.
Hominid, subspecies. Lived from about 1 million years ago to about 200,000 years ago. Remains found in Africa, China, Europe, Indonesia, Heidelberg Man, Peking Man, Solo Man. Cave sites in Hungary, Vertesszolos, (cranial capacity 1450 cc., 50,0000-400,000 years old, first fire-use?), and China, Choukoutien, with evidence of fire use. Cranial capacity 800-1100 cc.
a member of an extinct species of human being; probably an ancestor of modern man
extinct species of primitive hominid with upright stature but small brain; "Homo erectus was formerly called Pithecanthropus erectus"
2 to 0.4 million years ago
"Upright man;" the first fully upright hominid with a fairly big brain. Found in Africa from at least 1.8 million years ago, erectus is believed to be the first hominid to have moved into Europe and Asia. Homo habilis - "Handy man;" the first hominid named, by Louis Leakey, to the genus Homo. Leakey believed him to be the first hominid to make stone tools. Habilis, however, did not have a particularly big brain.
Meaning "upright man." This Early Stone Age hunter colonized new habitats throughout Africa, Europe, and southern Asia. Bigger and brainier than Homo Habilis or Australopithicus, Homo Erectus had the thickest skull of any member of the human species. Its strong muscles joining its neck to the rear skull bump stopped its heavy head from sagging forward. Average height was between 5 and 6 ft., and weight, 88 to 160 lbs.
Homo erectus (upright man) is an extinct species of the genus Homo. Dutch anatomist Eugene Dubois (1890s) first described it as Pithecanthropus erectus based on a calotte (skullcap) and a modern-looking femur found from the bank of the Solo River at Trinil, in central Java. However, thanks to Canadian anatomist Davidson Black's (1921) initial description of a lower molar, which was dubbed Sinanthropus pekinensis, most of the early and spectacular discovery of this taxon took place at Zhoukoudian in China.
Homo Erectus is a 2006 film currently in post-production directed and written by Adam Rifkin, and starring Adam Rifkin, Hayes Mac Arthur, and Ali Larter.
Homo erectus is a rock/pop album by the Austrian band Schürzenjäger.
