Definitions for "Locusts"
During the 30’s, grasshoppers came in hordes and descended on fields of North Dakota. They covered everything from the streets, the yards, and even the railroad tracks. Chickens would gorge themselves on the hoppers resulting in their meat becoming tainted and unfit to eat. Cities like Mott, had to turn their street lights on because the swarms of locusts would block out the sun. At Killdeer, grasshoppers were piled four inches deep. Railroads had to use extra sanding to help keep the trains on the tracks made slimy by crushed grasshoppers.
