a territory located in Thrace, part of current-day Serbia; this territory extended from the Balkans to the Black Sea; in 86 BCE, Moesia was divided by Domitian into two sections – Upper and Lower Moesia; it was an important military stronghold for the Romans.
Moesia is an ancient province situated in the areas of modern Serbia and Bulgaria. In ancient geography, Moesia was bounded to the south by Balkan (Haemus) and Å ar (Scardus, Scordus, Scodrus) mountains, to the west by the Drina river (Drinus), on the north by the Danube and on the east by the Euxine. The region was inhabited chiefly by Thracian and Illyrian peoples.
