Definitions for "Pundits"
Pundit is derived from a Hindi word for a ‘man of learningâ€(tm). It was used as a term for Indians who secretly explored and surveyed Tibet in the nineteenth century. They were used because the British were not allowed into Tibet themselves. The British were anxious to map Tibet as they feared a Russian attack on Nepal or India from the north.
