Definitions for "Remittances"
Payments from one country to another that are not payment for anything (goods, services, assets, the use of capital, etc.), such as charitable contributions, gifts to family members, and government aid.
Money earned or acquired by immigrants that is sent back to their country of origin. For some developing countries, remittances can form a sizeable chunk of their economy.
Remittances are transfers of money by foreign workers to their home countries. The World Bank officially estimates that migrants from developing countries in developed countries sent home more than $223 billion to their families in developing countries in 2005 – a figure more than twice the level of international aid. Remittances are playing an increasing larger role in the economies of many countries.
