Sabellius was a third century priest and theologian. He taught the doctrine of economic Trinity, a belief that God was indivisible, with Father, Son, and Holy Spirit being three modes of the same being called Sabellianism. His opposition to the orthodox idea of essential Trinity led to his excommunication as a heretic by Pope Calixtus I in AD 220.
