Sagar, also known as Saugor, is a city in Madhya Pradesh state of central India. It is the administrative seat of Sagar District and Sagar Division. The town is in a picturesque situation on a spur of the Vindhya Range, 1758 ft. above sea-level.

Sagar is a name of Anglo-Saxon origin. It is a patronymic name, hence most if not all people of this surname descend from a man (or even a number of men) known as Sagar. The name most likely derives from the diphthongal Anglo-Saxon word ‘Sægar’, meaning ‘sea-spear’.
