Uecomm was formed in 1996 as a subsidiary of Melbourne energy utility United Energy. In August 1997, United Energy Telecommunications (UET), as Uecomm was known, became the first electricity distribution business to be licensed as a telecommunications carrier. That same year, UET began building bespoke fibre networks for corporate and carrier customers.
