A hybrid telephone-television system proposed in the 1980s. Every industrialized country was championing its version - Canada the Telidon system, France the Minitel system, and so on. An early precursor of the internet, it was rendered redundant when the internet emerged.
Generic term for low speed interactive information services using PSTN and computer-type terminals - for example, Prestel in the UK, minitel in France. Also known as Viewdata. Often used for simple data communications applications in travel agents, banks and so on.
