A recording/replay system developed in the Seventies to improve three dimensional stereo definition by means of a special microphone recording technique, encode/decode electronics and a multiple surround sound loudspeaker playback system.
Ambisonics was invented by Michael Gerzon of the Mathematical Institute, Oxford, who with Professor Peter FellgettPeter Fellgett, Ambisonics. Part One: General System Description, Studio Sound, August 1975, 1:20--22,40. of the University of Reading, David Brown, John Wright and John Hayes of IMF, and building on the work of other researchers, developed the theoretical and practical aspects of the system in the early 1970s. Ambisonics is a series of recording and replay techniques using multichannel mixing technology that can be used live or in the studio.
