Broadband ISDN. The ITU-T is developing the B-ISDN standard, incorporating the existing ISDN switching, signaling, multiplexing and transmission standards into a higher-speed specification that will support the need to move different types of information around the public switched network.

Broadband Integrated Digital Network: A digital network with ATM switching operating at data rates in excess of 1.544 or 2.048 Mbps. ATM enables transport and switching of voice, data, image, and video over the same infrastructure.

An evolving CCITT international standard for the second generation of integrated services digital networks. Broadband ISDN services will be carried on fiber-optic networks that employ packet switching in a standardized fashion to integrate voice, data, monochrome, and colour facsimile images and one-way and two-way monochrome and colour video for local and long distance transmission.

It promises universal coverage based on ATM/SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy, i.e. ITU-T) technologies and optical fiber, supporting data, voice and video traffic.
