acronym for basic interpersonal communication skills required for verbal face-to-face communication; a type of "survival English" where linguistic interactions are embedded in a situational context accompanied by gestures
Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills. The term was coined by Jim Cummins, a Canadian sociolinguist, to refer to a student's social language skills and to distinguish them from academic language skills which he calls "Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency". Development of BICS is usually a two year process (see CALP).
Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills is the social, conversational language usually used for oral communication and writing. For Ells, BICS usually takes 1-3.years to develop. Often misinterpreted as language competence by non-ESL professionals. Students need to develop their CALP skills to be fully proficient speakers of English.
