Frequently caused by RSV, bronchiolitis is an infection of the small airways, resulting in obstruction. It begins with mild symptoms of an upper respiratory tract infection and progresses to include cough, wheeze, increased respiratory rate and retractions of axillary respiratory muscles in the collarbone and abdominal areas. Airway obstruction in young children can very dangerous as their airways are so much smaller than adults' and pneumonia can set in quickly.
