Definitions for "Cisapride"
Indicated for the treatment of gastroparesis, ileus, chronic constipation, and gastroesophageal reflux disease, cisapride is a drug that targets a receptor critical for the contraction of muscles in the digestive system. The drug was ultimately taken off the market due to severe side-effects resulting from interactions with other drugs.
Cisapride is a parasympathomimetic which acts as a serotonin 5-HT4 agonist. Stimulation of the serotonin receptors increases acetylcholine release in the enteric nervous system. It is sold under the trade names Prepulsid (Janssen-Ortho) and Propulsid (in the U.S.).
