Designated Examining Authority. The Self-Regulatory Organization (SRO) designated by the SEC as being responsible for determining a particular firm's financial soundness and operating condition for broker-dealers that are members of more than one self-regulatory organization. For firms that are members of both the NYSE and NASD, the designated examining authority is usually the NYSE. For most other broker-dealers, it is the NASD.
