Definitions for "Evidence-based practice"
commonly called "evidence-based medicine" or "evidence-based health care," this is the practice of using evidence from the research literature to complement professional education, clinical expertise, and patient preferences when making clinical decisions.
A process through which professionals use the best available evidence integrated with professional expertise to make decisions regarding the care of an individual. It is a concept which is now widely promoted in the medical and allied health fields and requires practitioners to seek the best evidence from a variety of sources; critically appraise that evidence; decide what outcome is to be achieved; apply that evidence in professional practice; and evaluate the outcome. Consultation with the client is implicit in the process.
Evidence-based work practices consciously integrate the best available research evidence with both professional experience and consumer choice to apply it to decision making practices in the workplace. It promotes the explicit, conscientious and judicious use of the best, most up-to-date research evidence to guide health care decisions (Sackett et al, 1996 cited by Roche and Cormack, 2000).
