is a targeted assessment that addresses the student’s unacceptable behavior. The results are to be used to develop a behavior intervention plan to replace the unacceptable behavior. The IEP team must look at reinforcers and consequences that will ensure that the behavior does not reoccur.
A process of attempting to understand the purpose, motivation and correlates of a problem behavior. The result of the process is the development of an appropriate behavior support and management plan.

A functional behavior assessment is a comprehensive and individualized strategy to identify the purpose or function of a student's problem behavior(s); develop and implement a plan to modify variables that maintain the problem behavior; and teach appropriate replacement behaviors using positive interventions.
