A phase of the Moon in which its longitude differs from that of the Sun by more than 90 degrees, but less than 180 degrees, and it is more than half lit, but not fully lit. If it is East of the Sun, and increasing the amount by which it is East of the Sun, the portion which is lit increases from day to day, and we say that the Moon is waxing gibbous. If it is West of the Sun, and decreasing the amount by which it is West of the Sun, the portion which is lit decreases from day to day, and we say that the Moon is waning gibbous.
