Goanna is the name given to any of the various Australian monitor lizards of the genus Varanus, as well as to certain species from South-east Asia. The name is presumed to be derived from iguana, as early European settlers likened them to the South American lizards. There are around 20 species of goanna, 15 of which are unique to Australia.
