Independent Software Vendors
Independant Software Vendor. A somewhat historic term, but still frequently used today. In the early days of computing most software was written by hardware manufacturers for their own hardware and was referred to as "proprietary". Independant Software Vendors produce software which runs on other companies hardware and generally have no involvement in the manufacture of hardware.
A software producer that is limited to producing applications for a single hardware manufacturer, e.g. Microsoft.
