A coded representation of digital data that is not compressed. Linear PCM spreads values evenly across the range from highest to lowest, as opposed to nonlinear PCM, which allocates more values to more important frequency ranges.
PCM is the usual digital method used for audio playback of music CDs. DVDs have a greater volume so they use Linear PCM, which has a higher sampling rate. Compressed PCM signals are called packed PCM (PPCM).
A non-compressed digital audio format. The DVD specification allows for 16 to 24 bit Linear PCM audio sampled at 48 or 96 kHz
Linear Pulse Control Modulation is a string of sampling codes in a digital audio file, a code for each sample. Linear PCM does not involve any compression techniques, and can be used in DVD as it is, or as base for a compressed format.
Linear PCM (LPCM) is an uncompressed audio format that is similar to CD audio, but with higher sampling frequencies and quantisations. LPCM offers up to 8 channels of 48kHz or 96kHz sampling frequency and 16, 20 or 24 bits per sample but not all at the same time. These values compare with 44.1kHz and 16 bits as used for CD audio. The maximum bit rate is 6.144 Mb/s, which is much higher than Dolby Digital or MPEG-2 coding. LPCM offers high quality (similar to DVD-Audio ) but its high data rate leaves little bandwidth for video on a DVD video disc. Disctronics DVD-Video audio
An uncompressed audio format with more channels and higher sampling frequencies than even Dolby Digital or MPEG-2 can handle.
Linear PCM Linear Pulse Code Modulation - Conversion of analog signals to pulse signals without compression. Linear PCM is used as a coding system for the sound of music CDs and DVD discs. DVD discs in NTSC format has been standardized to adopt audio data either in Dolby Digital (5.1 channels maximum) or in Linear PCM (non-compressed digital audio). Audio is recorded to music CDs at the sampling frequency of 44.1KHz with the quantization of 16 bits, and at the sampling frequency of 96KHz (the highest audio spec) with the quantization of 24 bits when audio is recorded to DVD discs.
