Materia are basically little compressed blobs of Mako energy which contain magic spells and summons (among other things), and are only found naturally in places where absolutely pure Mako energy can be found. Shinra, Inc's collection and use of Materia means that the Planet's Mako supplies are slowly but surely running out.
