a mysterious labyrinth that rose from Grail Lake.
A network of interconnected passages meant to be a challenge to navigate from start to end. Today this most often means a non-unicursal intellectual puzzle. (There are exceptions, e.g. a Mizmaze is an old term for a unicursal turf Labyrinth.) Comes from the Old English word to confuse or confound. See also Labyrinth.

something jumbled or confused; "a tangle of government regulations"
a confusing network of passages and winding interconnecting paths
a construction (of hedges, stone or the like) designed to confuse anyone who enters, involving multiple convoluted pathways within which it is very easy to lose one's way and emerge only by chance, if at all
a frightening and confusing place

a puzzle that requires playing a guessing game and it is a "head" experience

a set of paths with numerous dead-ends, twists and turns
A formal garden planting, usually of evergreen shrubs, that forms a matrix of paths that lead from the outer entrance to the center of the square, rectangle or circle. Unlike a labyrinth, which has one path, a maze includes wrong turns and dead ends, so the route of the center is not self-evident. Typically a maze has walls or hedges at least head height that makes it impossible to see the destination.
A network of paths designed as a puzzle. Garden mazes can be designed using turf, paving, hedges or other materials. The idea is ancient. Example 1 Example 2
(Labyrinth) - A complex network of paths or passages between high hedges or in turf, designed to puzzle those walking through it.
A device use in the study of animal and human learning, consisting of a correct path and blind alleys.
A maze is a tour puzzle in the form of a complex branching passage through which the solver must find a route. This is different from a labyrinth, which (strictly speaking) has an unambiguous through-route and is not designed to be difficult to navigate (despite the common uses of the word to indicate various complex, confusing structures). The pathways and walls in a maze or labyrinth are fixed (pre-determined).
Maze is a solitaire card game using 48 out of a deck of 52 playing cards. Although the words maze and labyrinth are synonymous with each other, this game and the solitaire game of Labyrinth should not be confused with each other because they are different in the manner of game play and dealing. In fact, this game is more akin to another solitaire game, Gaps, though less mechanical.
