The material through which the carpet fibers are tufted.

A sheet of fabric which the carpet yarns are tufted onto. The primary backing is what you see when you look between the fibers of a carpet. See also secondary backing.

Backing in a tufted carpet into which the tufts are inserted. The backing is then bonded with latex on its back side to hold the tufts in place.
