Blake's Rahab, who has the name of both a (usually redeemed) harlot and an allegorical dragon of Empire in the Bible, represents false Religion, hid in War.
Rahab is either (1) The prostitute who hid Joshua's 2 spies in Jericho (Joshua 2,6) and later became an ancestor of Jesus (Matthew 1:5) and an example of faith (Hebrews 11:31; James 2:25). (2) Literally, "pride" or "arrogance" -- possibly a reference to a large aquatic creature (Job 9:13; 26:12; Isaiah 51:9) or symbolically referring to Egypt (Psalm 87:4; 89:10; Isaiah 30:7).
The prostitute of Jericho who harbored and assisted the Israelite spies prior to the conquest of Canaan; not to be confused with the Rahab of mythic and prophetic literature that is another name for the sea monster. See Chapter 6.
Rahab, (Heb. rachav; i.e., "broad," "large") was, according to the book of Joshua, a woman who lived in the city of Jericho in the Promised Land and originally worked as a prostitute.
In Jewish folklore, Rahab is the name of a sea-demon, a dragon of the waters, the "ruler of the sea". Rahab is or was the angel of insolence and pride, responsible for shaking the waters and producing big waves; he is also responsible for the roaring of the sea. According to some sources, he was the guardian angel of Egypt, a position often designated to other angels such as Belial, Mastema, Samael and Uzza.
Rahab is a video game character in the Legacy of Kain series. He was voiced by Neil Ross.
In Jacqueline Carey's Kushiel's Legacy series, Rahab is the angel of Pride and Insolence, called the Lord of the Deep by D'Angeline sailors and the Prince of the Deep by Yeshuites. He is conceptually related to the demon of Jewish folklore.
