A member of the Persian ruling dynasty dating from the reign of Cyrus the Great (ca. 550 BCE) to the death of Darius III (330 BCE) following his defeat by Alexander the Great in the Battle of Gaugamela. The dynasty took its name from Achaemenes (Persian, Hakhamanish), its early 7th century BCE putative founder.
