The term was introduced in the nineteenth century by the Charity Organisation Society to cover the work with individuals and families they undertook to ensure that the financial and other resources they gave to the poor were used well. In the middle of the twentieth century it became the name for the social work method adopted by social workers influenced by psychodynamic theories.
