A particular type of headache that mainly affects men by a 6 to 1 ratio. It is characterized by intense but brief (30 minutes to 2 hours) pain in and around one eye occurring daily or several times per day in "clusters" that typically last for a couple of months. The patient then may go for many months with no headaches at all. Along with the headache, there are usually other phenomena such as tearing and redness of the affected eye, or stuffy nose.
A syndrome that is more common in males resulting in one sided severe pain around the eye which usually occurs at night and is associated with nasal stuffiness, and tearing of the eye.
An intense and painful headache. An individual suffering from cluster headaches will have headache for 30-90 minutes twice a day for several months. The headaches will disappear entirely for months only to return again. This cycle may occur for 1 year or many years.
A headache in which pain originates behind or around one eye and generally awakens the individual from sleep; pain may radiate into the temple, jaw, nose, teeth, or chin; the eyelid droops, the eye tears, the face flushes, and the nose congests; causes excruciating pain. Individual headaches last 15 minutes to 3 hours but tend to "cluster", occurring up to several times per day for periods of about 1 to 16 weeks and then not again for months or years.
Multiple short attacks of very severe unilateral head pain. Associated symptoms (e.g. watering eye, red eye, running nose etc.) usually occur on the same side as the headache.
The least common primary headache; often brief, but the cycle of pain can recur for weeks at a time; characterized by pain behind one eye with tearing and nasal stuffiness on that side.
Cluster headaches are rare, extremely painful and debilitating headaches that occur in groups or clusters.
