Definitions for "Colpus"
(pl. colpi) An elliptical aperture resembling a groove or furrow with a length and breadth ratio greater than 2.
Longitudinal furrow-like modification in the exine of pollen grains, associated with germination and often also important for harmomegathic swelling and shrinking. When used strictly, the colpus must be meridional and will cross the equatorÑthus restricting its use to dicotyledonous angiosperms. More loosely, the term is synonymous with sulcus. Pl. colpi.
(pl. colpi, adj. colpate) ( Erdtman, 1943) An elongated, aperture with a length/breadth ratio greater than 2. Comment: Some authors restrict the term to an meridional aperture (and contrast this with a distal or proximal sulcus), but since shape is the defining criterion the term is equally applicable to other locations (for example, pantocolpate pollen). The precise meaning is often indicated by the use of a prefix, as for example in, ectocolpus, endocolpus, syncolpate. Colpus equatorialis (pl. colpi equatoriales) ( Iversen and Troels-Smith, 1950) Synonym of endocingulum.
