A life-threatening condition associated with uncontrolled type 1 diabetes mellitus resulting from a lack of insulin. Without insulin, glucose is not utilized and the body resorts to the excessive use of fat as an energy source. This results in a buildup of ketone waste products, metabolic acidosis, and electrolyte imbalance. Unless treated immediately with insulin and electrolyte replacement, the person will not survive.
