City in Siberia, located 70 kilometres from Lake Baykal, founded in the mid-17th century by Russian Cossacks on the banks of the Angara River. The city later became the capital of Eastern Siberia.
Irkutsk is one of the largest cities in Siberia. It is a fortified military post, an archbishopric of the Russian Orthodox Church, and the administrative center of Irkutsk Oblast. It is situated 5,185 km by rail from Moscow.
