Ancient Egyptian word for a "ghost". According to this tradition, these spirits wandered the earth to haunt their families, spread illness, or to take "possession" of animals. Those persons who died as a result of execution for committing a crime, committed suicide, or drowned at sea, were regarded to become a rather malevolent form of ghost.
