This is a severe sleeping disorder. A person who has narcolepsy may fall asleep while writing a letter, driving a car, or carrying on a conversation. Individuals with this dysfunction have recurring, irresistible attacks of drowsiness, and simply fall asleep at inappropriate times. These can occur for a period of a few seconds anywhere to 30 minutes and in severe cases occur several times in a day.
a disorder characterized by uncontrollable attacks of deep sleep.
n. an extreme tendency to fall asleep in quiet surroundings or when engaged in monotonous activities.
a sleep disorder in which the patient has an irresistible need to sleep during the day. A patient may also experience cataplexy sleep paralysis, hypnagogic hallucinations, and or sleep working.
Recurrent, uncontrollable, brief episodes of sleep.
A condition that causes a person to fall asleep uncontrollably during the day, regardless of what they are doing at the time.
sleep disorder; irresistible attacks of daytime sleep; loss of muscle tone when experiencing intense emotion.
An uncommon, complex sleep disorder where a deficit in the neuro transmitter hypocretin results in "impaired control of the boundaries that normally separate the state of wakefulness from REM and non-REM sleep." As such, narcolepsy is characterized by the primary symptoms of excessive daytime sleepiness, fragmented nighttime sleep and abnormal manifestations of REM sleep phenomena including cataplexy, sleep paralysis and hypnagogic hallucinations.
A condition characterized by recurrent episodes of daytime sleepiness and lapses in consciousness.
A sleep disorder characterized by falling asleep at inappropriate moments.
A disease that is frequently inherited in an autosomal recessive fashion. Affected dogs appear to fall asleep, suddenly losing control of their hind legs or collapsing in complete paralysis, while still being entirely aware of their surroundings. Attacks last from a few seconds to a few minutes and end with no residual effects. Some sporadic cases of narcolepsy are not inherited.
sudden, irresistible sleep attacks.
A spontaneous attack of deep sleep lasting for a short time.
A severe sleep disorder characterized a persisting pattern of sleep attacks accompanied by loss of muscle tone and abnormal EEG activity. The disorder is not caused by an underlying medical disorder, the effects of a substance (including medications) and is not better explained by a pre-existing psychiatric disorder.
A sleep disorder marked by sudden, uncontrollable urges to sleep, causing an individual to fall asleep at inappropriate times. Medications and behavioral approaches such as scheduled naps can help control narcolepsy.
a condition in which an individual experiences an uncontrollable desire for sleep or attacks of sleep during the day
The Condition"...Narcolepsy is a heritable central nervous system disorder that is a common cause of sleep disturbance and affects some 0..."
a sleep disorder characterized by being able to fall asleep without warning and immediately going into REM.
a physical condition characterized by episodes of inappropriate and often involuntary sleep in the form of naps that may last a few minutes to hours; usually accompanied by cataplexy, sleep paralysis, and hypnagogic hallucinations.
is a condition when someone is often sleeping in the daytime.
Excessive sleepiness and attacks of muscle weakness. Sleep paralysis, hallucinations, and disrupted sleep are frequently associated symptoms.
A neurological disorder marked by a sudden recurrent uncontrollable compulsion to sleep . Narcolepsy is often associated with cataplexy (a sudden loss of muscle tone and paralysis of voluntary muscles associated with a strong emotion), sleep paralysis (immobility of the body that occurs in the transition from sleep to wakefulness), what are called hypnagogic hallucinations (pre-sleep dreams) and automatic behaviors (such as doing something "automatically" and not remembering afterwards how one did it). See the entire definition of Narcolepsy
A sudden, uncontrollable disposition to sleep occurring at irregular intervals, with or without obvious predisposing or exciting cause.
A disorder characterized by uncontrollable episodes of deep sleep.
A rare, chronic sleep disorder characterized by constant daytime fatigue and sudden attacks of sleep.
A disorder characterised by sudden and uncontrollable, though often brief, attacks of deep sleep, sometimes accompanied by paralysis and hallucinations.
A condition characterized by sudden and uncontrollable attacks of sleep.
Sufferers of narcolepsy experience periodic attacks of an uncontrollable urge to sleep during normal waking hours.
A syndrome that is often hereditary, and characterized by repeated attacks of sudden sleep that may be associated with other specific abnormalities making up the narcolepsy complex.
A neurological condition in which people experience excessive daytime sleepiness, cataplexy, sleep paralysis, hallucinations and intermittent, uncontrollable sleep attacks during the day.
Repeated irresistible tendency to fall asleep in quiet surroundings or when engaged in monotonous activities
a condition of unknown cause characterised by sudden attacks of sleep or muscle weakness, hallucinations and sleep paralysis.
(nar-co-lep-si) A cause of daytime sleepiness due to an inherited disorder of the control of dreaming sleep. Has to be differentiated from sleep apnoea, periodic leg movements and other rarer causes of daytime sleepiness.
sleep disorder characterized by sudden and repeated attacks of sleep, usually accompanied by cataplexy, hypnogogic hallucination, and sleep paralysis
Narcolepsy is a serious sleep disorder that can be very disabling. Approximately one in 2000 people has the condition. Individuals with narcolepsy experience constant sleepiness and an ongoing struggle to stay awake. The sleepiness in narcolepsy is so significant that people with the disorder often fall asleep in inappropriate places. The state of sleepiness in narcolepsy often does not improve with increased sleep. If this disorder is not appropriately diagnosed and treated it can be very devastating to the individual's quality of life.
a condition characterized by extreme daytime sleepiness
a chronic neurological disorder that involves the body's central nervous system. A major symptom of narcolepsy is excessive and overwhelming daytime sleepiness.
sleep disorder characterized by brief attacks of deep sleep, and with symptoms including excessive sleepiness, cataplexy, sleep paralysis, hypnogogic hallucinations, overwhelming daytime sleepiness (even after adequate nighttime sleep), and an abnormal tendency to pass directly from wakefulness into REM sleep. Not all narcoleptics have all of these symptoms.
Intrusion of REM sleep into wakefulness; Onset of deepest sleep in a rapid, overwhelming fashion; The prevalence of narcolepsy has been calculated at about 0.03% of the general population
A sleep disturbance characterized by an uncontrollable tendency to fall asleep for brief periods at inopportune times.
The Condition"...It is the second most common cause of disabling daytime sleepiness after sleep apnea..."
Narcolepsy is a chronic (long lasting) disease of the brain (central nervous system). Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) is the main symptom and is present in 100% of patients with narcolepsy. Narcolepsy is a sleep disorder that causes overwhelming and severe daytime sleepiness that often occurs at inappropriate times and places, even after adequate nighttime sleep.
A sleep disorder characterized by excessive sleepiness, cataplexy, sleep paralysis, hypnagogic hallucinations, and an abnormal tendency to pass directly into REM sleep from wakefulness. It was recently found to be caused by an abnormal gene in the brain.
The Condition"...Common symptoms include ... Hypnotic-like hallucinations..."
Narcolepsy is a neurological condition most characterized by Excessive Daytime Sleepiness (EDS). A narcoleptic will most likely experience disturbed nocturnal sleep, confused with insomnia, and disorder of REM or rapid eye movement sleep. It is a type of dyssomnia.
