In the same mould as a tabla but is formed as a single drum and was used in accompaniment of north Indian or Hindustani classical music. Largely extinct on the concert stage now due to the demise in popularity of the dhrupad style of singing that the drum traditionally accompanied. It is responsible for the majority of tabla solo repertoire which exists today and is therefore of considerable historical significance.
