The Condition"...As the disorder progresses, the liver and spleen may enlarge, causing a dull, intermittent ache in the abdomen..."
A neoplastic transformation of all blood cell lines (erythrocyte, leukocyte, and platelet) associated with increased numbers of cells in the peripheral blood. Contrast with secondary erythrocytosis as seen in cyanotic heart disease. see also erythrocytosis.
A clonal disease characterized by the over-production of blood cells by a mutant multipotential hematopoietic stem cell in the marrow. The hallmark of the disease is an increased number of red cells. The number of white blood cells and platelets are also usually increased. The accumulation of red cells is progressive and usually requires treatment at the time of diagnosis. The increase in white cells is ysually slight but the increase in platelets may become troublesome and require treatment as well.
The Condition"...Rarely, polycythemia vera progresses to leukemia; certain treatments increase this likelihood..."
A condition in which too many red blood cells are made in the bone marrow and build up in the blood.
The Condition"...Rarely, a bone marrow biopsy is needed..."
A life-shortening disorder of the bone marrow.
neoplastic disorder of the common hematopoietic precursor cell in which a pronounced increase in the production of erythrocytes is accompanied by an increased in total erythrocyte mass.
A type of blood disorder that causes an excess of red blood cells. Some patients may also have an increased number of white blood cells and platelets.
a blood disorder where there is an increase in all blood cells, particularly red blood cells.
A disease in which there are too many red blood cells in the bone marrow and blood, causing the blood to thicken. The number of white blood cells and platelets may also increase. The extra blood cells may collect in the spleen and cause it to become enlarged. They may also cause bleeding problems and make clots form in blood vessels.
The Condition"... Hemoglobin levels and hematocrit are abnormally high when this condition is present..."
The Condition"...The excessive numbers of red blood cells produced in polycythemia increases the volume of blood and makes it thicker so that it flows less easily through small blood vessels..."
