Pontus (Greek ), is a geographic term of with a variety of usages. In ancient times the Black Sea and its shores were referred to as the Pontos (the main) following the exploration and the colonization of the Anatolian and other Black Sea cities by the Ionian Greeks beginning about 800 B.C. The name eventually became more specific to the area of northeast of Anatolia in late classical times.
Pontus was annexed as a joint province with neighboring Bithynia in 63 BC.
