Powerlifting is the sport of training the "big three" lifts for a 1 rep max. The big three consists of the deadlift, bench press and squat. The reason for training them is that they are one of the best measures of raw strength. Almost all serious athletes practise them to increase base level strength and it is also one of the best ways of increasing body mass. There are many federations involved in powerlifting but they can be roughly divided into two camps, those that allow assistance gear (bench shirts, squat suits) and those that don't. Powerlifting is a strength sport, consisting of three events: the squat, the bench press, and the deadlift. The maximum weight lifted in each event is totalled for a final score; lifters compete in bodyweight classes. Powerlifting is of relatively modern origin, with the first formal competitions occurring in the mid 1960s.
