Definitions for "Sodar"
Acoustic device similar to a Sonar but working in the air. Used for remote sensing of the lower atmosphere, this large instrument gives information such as wind speed, direction and temperature at various altitudes. More info here
SOnic raDAR. The SODAR, or acoustic radar, measures how high into the atmosphere the ground-related atmospheric turbulence extends. UNSW has a phased-array SODAR atop the AASTO. It has a highly directional beam that is very, very loud. Fortunately the beam is directed upwards; from beside the AASTO the sound is pleasantly reminiscent of a song bird.
(Coined word from sound detection and ranging.) Sound-wave transmitting and receiving equipment operated on principles analogous to those of radar. Irregularities in atmospheric temperature and wind velocity constitute sources of scattering for acoustic waves. Sodars measure vertical profiles of the mean and turbulent properties of the sound to heights of several hundred meters by transmitting acoustic waves upward and measuring the Doppler shift in the backscattered acoustic signals. Sodar is sometimes inappropriately called acoustic radar.
