Definitions for "UNDERSERVED"
The population groups that have historically been overlooked in terms of programming and support. These groups are generally described as underserved: rural communities (because of geographic isolation), at-risk youth, people with disabilities, and people of color.
Underserved persons are provided with inadequate services in relationship to others with similar needs. Underserved groups with related socioeconomic and demographic have recently occupied substantial political attention. These persons are most commonly underserved due to lack of adequate medical services and health care providers in the geographic area of residence, among other factors.
Individuals or groups who lack access to health services or information relative to the national average. The underserved population may include residents of rural, remote, or inner-city areas; members of certain racial and ethnic groups; socioeconomically disadvantaged persons; or people with disabilities.
