The Undersheriff in American law enforcement is the second in charge of an American Sheriff's Office. The position is usually filled from within the force by a career law enforcement officer as opposed to the publicly elected sheriff. The New York City Sheriff's Office has five undersheriffs, each one is responsible for a borough of New York City while the Sheriff acts as High Sheriff.
