The Audit Commission are a public body who are there to ensure that public services provide the best value for money. Public services are assessed by the Audit Commission by comparing the service that is currently being provided against the Audit Commissions values. In addition to this the Audit Commission ask that every council produce a Best Value plan setting out its aims and objectives for the following year on how they will meet the best value requirements. The Audit Commission is a public corporation in the United Kingdom, established under the Local Government Finance Act 1982, to appoint auditors to all local authorities in England and Wales. The National Health Service and Community Care Act 1990 extended the remit of the Commission to cover health service bodies. Legislation covering the Commission’s activities was consolidated into the Audit Commission Act 1998.
