A tree of the genus Ulmus, of several species, much used as a shade tree, particularly in America. The English elm is Ulmus campestris; the common American or white elm is U. Americana; the slippery or red elm, U. fulva.
A slow growing hardwood tree (Ulmus) once extremely common in hedgerows and woods but suffered from Dutch Elm Disease in the late 20th century. Slowly being replanted by Wych Elm which is resistant to this disease.
A hard, durable and coarse grained wood. Used for ship building. See also: Timber.

Entry Level Math (ELM) is a college entrance test designed to assess the skill levels of entering CSU students in the areas of mathematics typically covered in three years of preparatory mathematics courses in high school. Those undergraduates who do not demonstrate college-level skills will be directed to courses or programs designed to help them attain these skills.
Acronym for the Entry Level Mathematics Exam. Entering undergraduates who are not exempt are required to take the ELM before their first semester on campus. Exemptions and other EPT information can be obtained from the CSULB Testing office or at their web site at http://www.csulb.edu/centers/testing
