In scripture, the word heaven has three meanings: The sky, where the clouds are and where weather happens. This is probably the meaing in Matthew 3:16. We use heaven in this sense when we describe an approaching thunderstorm by saying that the “heavens are angry.†The place where the stars and planets are located, as in Matthew 24:29. We use heaven in this sense when we talk about the grandeur of the “heavens†while looking at the nighttime sky. The place where God abides with His angels, as in Matthew 3:17. In popular religion, good people zip off to heaven at the time of death. In Christianity, when Christians die, their souls go to Paradise (Luke 23:43, also called the Bosom of Abraham) to await the Resurrection and the Last Judgment, after which they live in the New Jerusalem, also called the New Earth.

The origins of this term are lost in antiquity, but the best guess would be Greek kamara 'vault, covering' or 'sky' as abode of the gods. Similar Danish, German, and Swedish himmel and Dutch hemel are also a good candidates. Another source may be Old English heofon and Old Saxon hevan. The scientific community is still working on this one. Dictionaries define it as; 1. A celestial paradise in Christian and Islamic religions that is the abode of God, angels and virtuous souls. 2. A supernatural region inhabited by a deity, deities, or slain heroes. 3. Any area above the earth, such as the firmament or sky. 4. A state of happiness.

Heaven is everywhere present. Heaven is within everyone of us. It is a stat of consciousness. We experience Heaven when we feel united with God.
The Bible speaks of three heavens: (1) the atmosphere surrounding earth, that is, the sky (Acts 1:9-11); (2) space, including our solar system and the observable stars and galaxies (Genesis 1:14-18; Psalm 8:3); and (3) the location of God's throne, from where He governs the entire universe, called "the third heaven" (2 Corinthians 12:2). Solomon said: "God is in heaven and you are on earth" (Ecclesiastes 5:2). In the Bible, the context usually tells us which of the three "heavens" is being discussed.
The realm of God's direct dominion of love, in which human beings who have completed the purpose of creation exist eternally in oneness with God. Heaven is a location only in the sense that it exists wherever God's love is expressed fully by true men and women. Because the body is needed for spiritual growth, heaven must be created on earth by human beings fulfilling their purpose, before it can exist in the spiritual world.
