"Data about data." Usually refers to agreed-on definitions and business rules stored in a centralized repository so business users – even those across departments and systems – use common terminology for key business terms. Can include information about data's currency, ownership, source system, derivation (e.g. profit = revenues minus costs), or usage rules. Prevents data misinterpretation and poor decision making due to sketchy understanding of the true meaning and use of corporate data.
The literal definition of metadata is "data about data". It enhances the core data by providing further information about it. For example your data might actually be a picture. The picture itself is the core data but you might also store additional information with the picture such as the photographer's name, what company holds the copyright, what format it is in etc. This additional information is known as metadata.

Author generated source code that is placed in the header section of an HTML document. Current popular meta tags that can affect search engine rankings are keywords and description. The meta KEYWORDS tag is used to group a series of words that relate to a website. These tags can be used by search engines to classify pages for searches. The meta DESCRIPTION is used to describe the document. The meta description is then displayed in search engine results.
Special data in a webpage's html code that often describes the page's relativity or context. Meta data is extensively used by search engines.

Even when they are only partly structured, many documents contain Meta data that can considerably facilitate access (date, author, etc.).

Refers to small bits of information stored by some computer programs such as Microsoft Word®. Meta data can contain the history of the document, including all users who have modified and/or saved it, the directory structure of all machines it was saved on, and names of printers it was printed on.
