Meta is the Greek word for Data or information. Meta data means data about data and refers to small bits of information stored / used by computer programs (like an internet browser) about other files (like a web page) or programs. An example of meta data could be a catalogue index in a library where a catalog contains data about the books in the library.
Definitional data that provides information about or documentation of other data managed within an application or environment. Meta data may include descriptive information about the context, quality and condition, or characteristics of the data. Also commonly referred to as an abstract.
