Grandmaster Aaron Nimzovich's term for giving a piece or square more protection from your pieces or pawns than is immediately needed to guard it.
excessive protection
Defending a strong point more times than appears necessary. The idea is that the overprotected pawn or square may be causing considerable problems for the opponent, who would be unwise to try to break the strong point, because he would release the latent power of the protecting pieces. shielding a child so much that he or she becomes overly dependent on parents.
