Definitions for "Powdery mildew"
This is a common fungal disease that can attack any herbaceous plant, though peas and beans are particularly susceptible. Some woody species, like roses, are also vulnerable. It is easily recognizable by the gray or white powdery splotches on leaves, buds, and stems (the powder is the fungal spores and filaments). Though the fungus is spread by water or humid air, it needs a dry surface to establish itself. Water plants in the morning to allow leaves to dry before night. Encourage air circulation around leaves by staking and keeping beds cleaned of weeds and debris. Sulfur is a last-dtich control. A dilute solution of baking soda in water should be tried first.
