Shell access is a Linux feature that allows you to connect to your website securely to change permissions, edit scripts live, etc.
Access to an interactive user interface where the user can connect with a Unix operating system. The shell is the layer of programming that understands and executes the commands a user enters.
Shell access allows you complete control (as if you were sitting in front of the server itself!) over your website. Edit your html and cgi files using Joe's Own Editor, an easy to use editor. Move your files around and perform low-level "tweaking" of your web site to the point of absolute perfection. * Note: We do not permit the running of any background programs (ie: robots, etc..)

Access to the command prompt of the shell program.
The outer layer of a program that provides the user interface, or way of commanding the computer. In UNIX, the Bourne shell was the original command processor, with C shell and Korn shell developed later. In DOS, the shell command typically specifies COMMAND.COM, the command processor that interprets commands such as Dir and Type. DOS also came with an optional user interface, known as the DOS Shell, which was a different kind of shell.
