Definitions for "Attainment Area"
An area with air quality that meets or exceeds the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) health standards as stated in the Clean Air Act. Nonattainment areas are areas considered not to have met these standards for designated pollutants. An area may be an attainment area for one pollutant and a nonattainment area for others.
An area considered to have air quality as good as, or better than, the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) as defined in the Clean Air Act. An area may be in attainment for one or more polutants but be in nonattainment for one or more other pollutants.
A geographical area, such as a city, state, or regional airshed, that is meeting EPA clean air standards.
