Double digging is a soil cultivation process with three steps. The first is the removing of the top 6-8"of soil. Next, usually done with a pitch fork, is the aeration of the lower level. Finally, replace the removed soil with added organic matter. Double digging can greatly improve soil structure.
A process whereby the gardener works the topsoil and also loosens the subsoil.
