Minor physical and developmental effects on a child because a birth mother drank alcohol during pregnancy. Children may have minor facial differences, be hyperactive, have difficulty staying on task, and have some learning disabilities.
Congenital abnormalities, primarily cognitive, caused by alcohol use during pregnancy. Not as severe as the abnormalities observed in FAS. Can occur with only a few drinks per day while pregnant.

The term, fetal alcohol effects, is used to indicate alcohol as a possible cause of a child's birth defects. It is used to describe children with prenatal exposure to alcohol, but with only a few of the characteristics shown by children with fetal alcohol syndrome.
A pattern of mental and physical birth abnormalities associated with children whose mothers abused alcohol during pregnancy. The symptoms are less severe than those in fetal alcohol syndrome.
